I think I heard about 2012 long before I heard about the y2k bug. Which means I've heard about post-millenial apocalypse stuff even longer.

Of course, my junior high school library had a book on pyramid power, and Chariots of the Gods, so you know our librarian had some serious critical thinking skills. I don't know, I started out both interested in this stuff and skeptical at a rather odd age.

I am very, very interested in a) debunking the 2012 myths and b) finding more detailed explanations of Mesoamerican cultures. (Please tell me I haven't accidentally used an offensive term.)

But anyway, amidst all of this, I might rail against Discovery Channel specials and Mayan Oracle Cards and books that purport to be about Mayan and Aztec mythology, but are, instead, New Age tripe of the very worst kind. (I don't mean to imply all New Age books are awful. It's a very catch-all kind of term that picks up both things that I think are interesting, and things that make me roll my eyes a lot.)

No, "Mesoamerican" isn't an offensive term- it just means 'central' or 'middle' American and describes the geographical area where a lot of the ancient cultures flourished.

The Wikipedia article about Mesoamerica is quite informative.
